Special forces ready to enter Afghanistan
Washington, Oct.10. War planes of the U.S. pounded targets in and
around the capital city of Kabul in what is seen as an
intensification of strikes against Afghanistan after relative
slow runs over the last two days. Specific targets are those of
the Taliban in Kabul.
Storm of planes won't stop: Al-Qaeda
Doha, Oct. 10. The Al -Qaeda network said today that the U.S.
would face further attacks by hijacked planes and urged ``all
Muslims'' to join for a jehad (holy war) against the U.S.
Call to kill Blair
London, Oct. 10. A London-based fundamentalist group, Al
Muhajiroun, has given a call to British Muslims to
``assassinate'' the Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Blair, to avenge the
bombing of Afghanistan.
JeM under 'close' U.S. watch
Washington, Oct. 10. The Bush administration has said that it was
putting the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) under ``close''
watch for possible listing as a foreign terrorist organisation.
Ensure inflow, Karnataka told
New Delhi, Oct. 10. Within hours of the Tamil Nadu Chief
Minister, Mr. O. Paneerselvam, expressing ``disappointment'' over
the outcome of the talks, the Cauvery River Authority (CRA)
headed by the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, today
directed the Karnataka Government to ``ensure inflows at the
Mettur reservoir as stipulated by the Tribunal, especially in
view of the situation being faced in the Cauvery basin''.
Dissolved
Colombo, Oct. 11 The Sri Lankan President, Ms. Chandrika
Kumaratunga, dissolved Parliament tonight. Polls will be held in
December. Earlier in the day, the Ceylon Workers Congress General
Secretary and Livestock Development Minister, Mr. Arumugam
Thondaman, quit the Cabinet to facilitate a `reconsideration' of
his party's support to the Government and eight dissident MPs
crossed over to the Opposition ranks. This comes a day ahead of a
no-confidence motion against the Government. Yesterday one MP
defected.
Tribunal on SIMI ban
New Delhi, Oct. 10. The Centre has constituted a tribunal to
adjudicate the ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India
(SIMI).
Economics Noble for three
Stockholm (Sweden), OCT. 10. Three Americans won the Nobel
Economic Prize on Wednesday for developing theories about
financial markets that can be applied to both developing and
advanced economies while two Americans and a Japanese scientist
shared the chemistry prize for showing how to better control
chemical reactions, leading to medicines including a treatment
for Parkinson's disease.
New CJI
New Delhi, Oct. 10. Mr. Justice S.P. Bharucha, seniormost Supreme
Court judge, will be the new Chief Justice of India (CJI),
succeeding the Chief Justice, Mr. Adarsh Sein Anand, who is
retiring on October 31, the Government announced today.
