Promising dancers

R. J. SHRUTHI and R. J. Abhinaya performed recently under the banner of Natya Sankalpa, headed by Urmila Satyanarayanan. Shruthi and Abhinaya, disciples of the vibrant Urmila, exhibited considerable skill and understanding of the technique as taught by their teacher. Both the young dancers exercised reasonable control over the aspects of Nritta; however their ability to express emotions needs to improve a lot. Their performance that evening included a Pushpanjali followed by Alarippu. A Jatiswaram in Yadukula Kamboji of the Tanjore Quartet revealed their sincerity. ``Bhavayami Raghuramam" in the place of a regular Varnam, gave enough scope for the dancers to dwell on the different episodic narrations. But it is essential that young dancers master traditional Varnams to gain proper grip, confidence and strength in Nritta and Abhinaya. Shruthi and Abhinaya were conducted by their teacher with vocal support from S. K. Suresh, N. Sikhamani (violin), T. Sashidhar (flute) and Nellai D. Kannan (mridangam).
