In Ariyakkudi style

ALLEPEY VENKATESAN'S vocal concert on AIR Chennai FM on March 28, beginning with the Sriragam varnam and moving on to a rare kriti of Muthuswami Dikshitar, "Palayamam Parvatisa" in Kannada, was a well organised effort with the artiste shrewdly confining himself to what was within his territory rather than pursuing the elusive.

His delineation of Malayamarutham, the Andal Thiruppavai and the swaras were indicative of his leanings towards the Ariyakkudi bani.

"Devi Ival Rama" of Arunachala Kavirayar tuned beautifully by Ariyakkudi in Kanada, the comprehensive Sankarabharana alapana, and Tyagaraja's ``Endukku Peddala" with neraval and swaras had enough musical credibility to receive the listener's nod of approval.

M. A. Krishnaswami on the violin made an impressive mark in his raga responses and swara repartees.

Thanjavur Ramadas on the mridangam and T. D. Balasubramaniam on the ghatam played a tani avartanam imbued with sensitive rhythmic patterns.
