BBC feature on Liberia

THE PROGRAMME "High Liberia: Between War and Peace" to be aired on BBC World, Friday, 15.00 looks at the aftermath of 14 years of civil war in Liberia, and asks whether the West African nation is finally on the road to peace.

During the conflict, half the population was forced from their homes. The country is now in ruins, and its people are still waiting for their lives to recommence.

Liberia is home to the largest UN peacekeeping force in the world, with more than 20,000 UN troops on the ground trying to disarm an estimated 50,000 combatants, including many children. With exclusive access to the disarmament process, this film offers a compelling look at life behind the headlines at a country whose future is in the balance.

Meet Moses, aged 11, who has been with rebel fighters for six years, and Winifred, who has been forced to live in crowded camps for the displaced for eight years. Both are finally able to look forward to a new life.
