"A Cinderella Story" ... fairy tale retold.
IT IS a fairy tale revisited — Cinderella updated. A Clifford Werber and Dylan Sellers Production presented by Warner Bros., "A Cinderella Story," (U/A) is a feel-good film with a story enjoyably adapted to modern lifestyle — cybernetics driven love on the lines of "You've Got Mail." And if it is the shoe that the original Cinderella left behind at the stroke of midnight, here it's the cell phone! "Cinderella ... " has its share of clichés and slapstick, which sometimes evoke a hearty laugh, sometimes a smile and at other times even a smirk.
"Do fairy tales come true," the young girl asks her dad. In her case it does. Sam Montgomery (Hilary Duff) loses her mom and dad early in life, and is hopelessly forlorn. Then there is this cruel step mom Fiona (Jennifer Coolidge), and her two hideous daughters in the house, where Sam is just a glorified servant. She's also made to work in Fiona's eat-out. So she's studying and working at the restaurant or at home through the day. But things turn bright and rosy when her rich Prince Charming Austin Ames (Chad Michael Murray) enters online. Cara Silverman's crisp editing keeps things in motion and Christophe Beck's background score helps enliven the proceedings. Directed by Mark Rosman, "A Cinderella Story" has all the ingredients of a breezy romance.
Made with clean fun in mind this modern version of the mobile toting Cinderella proves that the classic tale of yore could never get obsolete.
