Art works stand out

Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi showcased Bhikari Moharana's `patta' and palm leaf paintings.

LORD MANIFESTATION The patta painting aims to spread Jagannath culture and consciousness.

Every last day of the month, `Jagannathayana' is organised for promotion and propagation of Jagannath culture and consciousness. But although the cultural programmes show a bit of variety, the discourses and the art exhibition on the occasion suffer from the monotony of the sameness.

But this time there was an exception. Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi presented an art exhibition as a pictorial concept through time. The artist chosen was Bhikari Moharana who excels in patta painting and palm leaf painting for which he won National Award in 1992.

At `Jagannathayana', his paintings dealt with myths and legends associated with Lord Jagannath and other gods and goddesses. There were 24 paintings on view and the ones that stood out for their beautiful drawings and colour composition were Ram-Ravana yuddha, Gita, Giri Gobardhan, Shadabhuja Gouranga, Raasa, Jhulana, Ganesha, Raag-Rageni and Krushna Leela. The patta painting of the Trinity of Jagannath-Balabhadra and Subhadra was also exquisite for its visual appeal.

The Akademi's effort at introducing a new artiste every month would give variety of artistic appeal, apart from providing a platform to the talented and lesser-known artists.
