Agathiyan, winner of the national award for best direction for "Kadhal Kottai" proves again that he has the potential to make films with mass appeal. Kalaivani Movie Makers' "Selvam" has a good screenplay and Agathiyan, the author, has guided the actors well.
The first half keeps the viewers engrossed. It is only in the latter part that confusion shows up. Young Kannan's (Nanda) visit to the city has an eventful beginning as he rescues a girl (Monika) who is teased by a boy.
She invites him home and her father (Alex), misunderstands the gesture for romance. The next day the girl meets him and apologises. The father comes there, thrashes Kannan and Kannan is injured in the head and loses memory. He is treated by Dr. Lakshmi (Ranjitha) and Dr. Thenral (Uma). The duo sends him to Tirunelveli, his native place. There is a family reunion, which also brings cousin Jothi (Vani) into the picture.
Nanda makes good use of the scope the film offers. Uma is not only beautiful but also emotes well. Alex impresses with an understanding portrayal. Ranjitha comes up with a dignified performance. Vani as Jothi is yet to pick up the ropes of acting. Sabita Anand, Manivannan and Ajay Ratnam have done the roles to perfection.
Deva's background score is at times jarring. Camera work by Ramesh G is noteworthy. Editor Lancy Mohan must have shown better concentration. Agathiyan deserves kudos for his new venture.
