In connection with the 139th Jayanthi of the renowned playwright Chilakamarti Lakashmi Narasimham Pantulu, C.S.R.Kalamandir presented two of Chilakamurthy;s famous plays Prasanna Yadavam (Srikshna Narakasuru) and Prachanda Yadavam (Gayopakyanam). While Gayopakhyanam is being staged occasionally, by different troupes, the century-old Prasanna Yadavam had gone into oblivion.
It was not staged for almost 50 years now. Earlier this play was one of the choices of major theatre groups. As part of its efforts to revive old masterpieces, C.S.R. Kalamandir staged the plays. Kotte Venkatacharylu, himself an artiste and secretary of the Kala Mandir, brought this out and made it a point to put it back into the circuit.
He played the crucial role of Narakasura. T.Yanadi played the role of Lord Sri Krishna.. Dhananjayachari as Devendra, M. Jayalakshmi as Satyabhama and T. Lakshmi as Oorvasi donned other important roles. The story has its relevance to Deepavali which marks the slaying of Narakasura by Sri Krishna . The important point here is the role of Satyabhama in the war against demon. She takes up the bow and arrows to stall the advance of Narakasura at a time when her husband Sri Krishna fell unconscious, hit by an arrow of Narakasura. Once Krishna recovers he continues the war and kills the demon with his Sudarshana chakram . And the events that lead to this war is linked to the rivalry between Indra and Narakasura who after occupying the Indraloka casts his eye on Oorvasi and the latter's effort at hoodwinking the demon to weaken his strength. The epic based on the Bhagvatam was quite engrossing.
The artistes playing Narakasura, Sri Krishna, Satyabhama and Oorvasi played their roles effectively. Prabhakara Sarma, Subba Raju and others added their mite for the success of the play. . Kalamandir staged the ever popular, Gayopakhyanam on the next day, with veteran actor Ayyadevara Purushothama Rao and T. Krishna playing the role of Lord Sri Krishna in two different scenes
