Music competition

Hamsadhwani is conducting its annual music competition on February 12 from 10 a.m. at Youth Hostel, Second Avenue, Indira Nagar. Sub-juniors (7-12 years) can sing any four kritis of popular composers; juniors (12-17) seven kritis and seniors (17-23) ten kritis with raga alapana for any three songs. Rajah Anna-malaipuram Bhaktha Jana Sabha (Ph: 2493 8682) is conducting a competition in Carnatic music, vocal, violin, veena, mridangam, ghatam and other percussion instruments for boys and girls in the age group of 15 and 20. The competition is scheduled for February 5 at 1 p.m. at Sri Sringeri Jagadguru Pravachana Mandiram, R. A. Puram. Tyagaraja Aradhana
Adambakkam Isai Mandram Cultural Trust will celebrate Tyagaraja aradhana utsavam at Sri Rajavinayakar Baktha Mandali mandapam on February 4, from 9 a.m. Pancharatna kritis will be rendered under the leadership of P. S. Narayana Swamy Iyer. For details contact Ph: 2244 8841.
Kunnakkudy School of Music is also celebrating Tyagaraja Aradhana on January 27. The venue is Marundeeswarar temple, Tiruvanmiyur. Eminent musicians will sing Pancharatna kritis from 6.30 p.m. onwards, after a short puja. The musicians' get-together is aimed at spreading the message of non-violence through divine music.
Float festival
Sri Audikesava Perumal Peylawar Devasthanam, Mylapore (Ph: 2464 3873) is celebrating `Theppa Utsavam' (float festival) for Sri Audikesava Perumal from January 29. This five-day festival is being conducted after 36 years as the Chitrakulam has filled up to the brim now.
Anniversary
Siva Nattiyalaya Dance School, Alappakkam, (Ph: 2386 1245) will be celebrating the 12th anniversary on January 28, 6 p.m. at Kamaraj Memorial Hall. The chief guests are Adyar Lakshman, Director, Bharatha Choodamani, Dr. P. B. Sreenivos, singer-poet-music director, D. Sethu Kumanan, Chairman, Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science. S. P. Muthuraman will preside over the function. About 180 students will participate in the mega cultural show.
Mangalam Ganapathy Music Trust will celebrate the fourth anniversary on Jan. 29, 5 p.m. at Dakshinamoorthy Auditorium, R. K. Mutt Road. R. Vedavalli will preside over the function. A three-day concert from Jan. 27 will be conducted in which eminent musicians will render Mangalam Ganapathy's compositions.
Correction: In the review, `When the nagaswaram wove magic' by S. Sivakumar (Friday Review, January 20), the raga of the Narayana Tirtha tarangam, "Narayana Namo" is Madhayamaravali and not as mentioned.
