Explain conditions for tie-up with SP: JD(U) to Centre

Patna (PTI) With the Left keen on pulling the rug from under the feet of the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, Bihar's ruling JD(U) on Saturday demanded that the UPA explain the conditions on which it was seeking the support of the Samajwadi Party for survival to the nation.

"The UPA government badly needs the support of Samajwadi Party for survival in the event of the left pulling the plug which seems imminent...It is common knowledge that SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, facing a CBI probe, also desperately needs Centre's support to bail him out," state JD (U) President Rajiv Ranjan Singh 'Lalan' told reporters here.

"In the present circumstances it is the duty of the UPA government to explain to the country the conditions on which it proposed to ally with SP," the JD(U) MP said.

Charging the Manmohan Singh government with having focussed only on protecting the interests of capitalists and the industrial sector, Lalan said agriculture sector had been subjected to neglect during his tenure.

"The neglect of agriculture and various other sectors resulted in the widening gap between demand and supply and consequent price rise," he said.

"It is just to divert public attention from the issue of price rise that the Centre is keen on pressing ahead with the nuclear deal, which will pose a grave threat to India's sovereignty," he said.

Pointing out that political and scientific opinion on the deal was sharply divided, Lalan said the massive cost involved in generating nuclear energy would plunge the country into a debt trap and yet nuclear power will be out of the reach of the common man.

He said JD(U) workers would hold demonstrations against soaring prices at block level between August 16 and 30 and at district headquarters between September five and 12.
