Tradition's trendy makeover
Will tradition ever lose its sheen? Never. Period. That's what top-notch designer Ritu Kumar seems to reiterate through her creations. Inspired by typical Indian motifs, prints and embroidery, the inventive designer has been successfully giving tradition in a modern face.
Festive times demand festive colours and ostentatious fabrics. And Ritu's creations unmistakably capture the flavour of the season. The beauty of heavy crepe has spurred the designer to conjure up styles ranging from chic tops to classy saris. That classicism is the quintessence of her designs is evident in the cuts and craftsmanship. The pręt line comprises traditional salwar suits, lehngas, Indo-Western fusion ensembles and trendy tops.
The kurtas come in different lengths and are teamed with palazzos, patiala salwars or draw string pants. Pretty silk stoles accompany the suits to set off the mood of cool confidence to perfection.
The cottons salwar suits are priced Rs. 1,600 onwards, while the crepe creations with classy embroidery and subtle crystal work are priced at Rs.6,000 and above. Gorgeous crepes and super-fine nets give the aari-embellished saris (Rs.14,000 and above) a modern look. Pretty silk shirts with matching scarves in earthy hues are some of the attractions for today's upwardly mobile women. Ritu's signature is synonymous with impeccable craftsmanship. Be it the sari or the salwar, the embroidery is so fine and print-like. And it is the intricate traditional needlework that gives her contemporary couture a conventional edge.
