Ethnic elegance

TO THE delight of textiles and the sari in particular, Kalakshetra is exhibiting a grand revival in its weaving patterns. Superb innovations have been made to produce unique saris and dress materials.

Silk and cotton have been combined beautifully in bright shades for the lovely saris in typical Kalakshetra designs and colours — red and white, blue and green, blue and yellow, blacks and peacock blues — that are good for all functions including auspicious occasions.

Simple, finely woven cotton saris for cool day wear, well printed or painted kalamkari saris, dupattas and materials in vegetable dyes in colours that are striking are moderately priced. Block-printed borders on blouse pieces are stylish and reasonable.

The outlet is at the weaving centre, Kalakshetra, Thiruvanmiyur. And for those not just content with wearing these exquisites, Kalakshetra also teaches kalamkari — right from making the right vegetable dyes to painting and block printing of the fabric. Even an individual learner is accommodated, straightaway put to learning under the staff at the kalamkari section.
