Focus on web designing

INDEV IN association with UNICEF recently organised a two-day seminar/training programme on web designing for NGOs at the British Council.

Over 10 NGOs from Tamil Nadu participated in the seminar, which had sessions on the uses of the Internet, web designing and publishing, fundamentals of HTML, including practical sessions where the participants were allowed to design their own web site.

Indev (India Development information network) is the British Council's initiative to address problems faced by organisations in accessing development information on India. Started in 1998, "Indev aims to collect, categorise and disseminate information generated by various organisations, departments in the Government and leading NGOs working in India. In the past five years, over 500 NGOs have been trained under this scheme," says Venkata Kesavan, manager, Library Information Services.

The training programmes are conducted all over India on a regular basis.

"The British Council along with its research team, identifies the NGOs based on the type of work they are involved in for the training programme. An already trained NGO is not considered for training again, thus giving every organisation an opportunity to participate", explains Sujatha, resource person for Indev. The NGOs trained under the programmes are either allowed to host their own website or choose to have a website as part of the Indev site itself. However, a database structure of the NGOs in India is provided on the Indev website.

Madhu John, another resource person, feels that by hosting a website, NGOs in remote areas are able to get international recognition for the particular kind of work they are involved in. "With the advancement in technology and resources readily available, it is wise to make the best use of it than to lag behind" says Lakshmi, a participant.

"Developing our own website will provide us a platform to have a global reach and will also help us reach out to people who are interested in helping and recognising our work," smiles Krupa, another participant.

Apart from web hosting, Indev members can also avail library facilities.
