Remembering a great guru
THE LATE Padma Vibhushan awardee Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir, freedom fighter and parliamentarian, was remembered on his 104th birth anniversary by the International Council of Punjabis at New Delhi. Delhi's Chief Minsiter Shiela Dikshit, who was the guest of honour, announced that a hospital would be constructed in his memory.
As a tribute to Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir, who was Chief Minister of Punjab and also a poet, the programme started with a song based on his poem. After that the famous Punjabi singer, Hans Raj Hans enthralled the audience with his Sufi music. The chief guest, former Prime Minister I.K.Gujral received the First Day Cover of the stamp released in honour of Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir. His compiled works including poetry and prose, as well as a cassette album of his poems set to music were also released. Other dignitaries present included the Minister of State for External Affairs Vinod Khanna and former minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa.
Inder Dev Singh Musafir, grandson of Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir and managing director of Lee Cooper Shoes, India, announced a scholarship in memory of the Giani. It is reported that 15 meritorious students have been selected for this year's scholarship.
