Live life queen size...
CROSSING ALL age barriers, the trend now is to look slim, trim and well groomed. To conform to the norm, many could be seen struggling hard, sweating away at the gymnasium, starving oneself, popping slimming pills and much more. Some succeed but many don't. So, do the latter stop living life?
"Definitely not," says Nisha Somaia. Starting off shops in Delhi and Mumbai to retail garments for women who "do not look like anorexic models," she, along with her husband Pranay and two other friends - Jacquiline Meston and Laxmi Shah - wants now to "break the size barrier." With a well-known international men's wear brand coming out recently with outfits for oversized men, she too has an array of apparels for over-sized women in her recently opened shop, `Revolution' at New Delhi's Greater Kailash Part II and Shahpurjat.
"We do not promote women to be obese. We promote them to look good, no matter what their size is," says Nisha, who considers herself "large size" too. She says, from her experience, she "realised how much we are ignored in the western wear sector in this market." Pranay adds that designing on the lines of European style predictions, the sizing of their clothes starts from size 2 through to size 4. All of seven sizes that cover a waist size 28'' up to 44''.
Jacqueline, who heads the design team, informs that their latest summer collection includes henna tattoo prints, kimono sleeves, tie and dye, paisley prints, peasant tops, crochet lace, small floral liberty prints, hand embroidery and handkerchief sleeves. In sync with summer, the fabrics employed in the collection are cotton voile, cotton crepe, cotton poplins, cheesecloth and light-weight polyester.
The shop stacks are also filled with capris, kurtas, jeans, stretch denims and shirts.
"No more does a woman with slightly more weight need to wear only salwar-kameez or her husband's oversized shirt," adds Nisha. Well, it won't be wrong to say that this is overall an age of choices.
