Fast foods and combo meals
For quick, light repasts.
DRIVE DOWN past St. Joseph's Commerce College on Brigade Road and it is impossible to miss a bright pink board announcing a little eat-out's name — Café Flamingo. Once inside the recently opened roadside café, one sees the cool and casual interiors in red, orange, and black belying the Flamingo's pink, but likeable nevertheless.
Sukesh and Rita Srinivasan, people behind Café Flamingo, call it a café-cum-restaurant that caters to all sorts of tastes. The menu encompasses fast foods — sandwiches, salads, and sizzlers, and meals with Chinese and Indian flavours.
Ideally a place for youngsters and college-goers, you can savour salads (available in a choice of mayonnaise — Italian or Thousand Island dressings), grilled sandwiches, or hot dogs.
The sandwiches, which range over chicken, mushroom, salami, tomato and cheese, also feature Indian flavoured ones such as aloo tikki, gobi masala, and spicy paneer capsicum.
The café also offers a variation of the regular sandwich, the open grilled sandwich, which has a filling, layered over two "jumbo" slices of bread, and grilled. In fact, they remind you more of a pizza.
Commenting on the affordable rates of fast foods (between Rs. 20 and Rs. 40), Ms. Rita says: "We've planned this as a hangout for students and wanted to give them something in this price range." That's not bad at all, because the café gives you a helping of coleslaw and chips with all its sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs, which are a meal in themselves, with ten-inch rolls, stuffed with sausages, cream, mayonnaise, mustard etc.
In keeping with the reasonable rates, the menu is not exhaustive in every category, but Mr. Sukesh improvises new dishes for customers depending on their likes.
So, while the combination meals is served on a bed of rice, accompanied by potato, vegetables, salad, and a glass of Pepsi, the café also serves pan grilled, chicken/fish, Thai chicken, Indian grilled chicken, or vegetable stroganoff/kadai, along with other sea foods in different sauces to alter your meal.
Café Flamingo serves a "working lunch" targeted at the office-goers, between 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m.. The non-vegetarian meal (with a chicken/fish curry, salad, rice, Pepsi) is priced at Rs. 35, while the vegetarian one (gravy preparation such as rajma, channa, or a dal) is priced at Rs. 30.
Also available through the day are Chinese delicacies such as chilli paneer/chicken and vegetables/chicken made in hot pepper or garlic sauce.
They are served with fried rice and noodles.
Mr. Sukesh says that the café serves three varieties of chicken steaks and one vegetarian kind. The patty is richly covered in sauce (black pepper, or a tangy oriental sauce with pineapple, or a rich meat sauce with herbs) and served on a sizzler plate with pasta, potato croquet, vegetable, and a dinner roll to go along.
A meal at Café Flamingo can be aptly ended with delightful desserts and sundaes (which have equally delightful names such as Dancing Tango, Ebony and Ivory, Tropical Tease).
Beverages include mocktails invented by Mr. Sukesh and have exotic names.
Some of them are Mandarin Magic and Spanish Fly (if that doesn't get you, nothing will!).
The café recently introduced Sunday breakfasts and Friday/Saturday barbeques.
