CHASTE HINDI and Sanskrit shlokas roll off with ease from the mouth of this man who has more than `paanch' facets to his life and the characters he has portrayed. Rajesh Vivek is the big guy in question. Much before the famous Coke advertisement with `paanch' written all over it, he epitomised the bearded fakir with a conspicuous white costume in films like "Bandit Queen" and terrorised people with representation of dacoits like Jogi Thakur in "Joshilay" or Deva in "Vishwatma".
"I trained under Ebrahim Elkazi and became an `A-grade actor' in his repertory. Shyam Benegal saw my performance in a play and offered me the role of a fakir, Darya Shah, in the film `Junoon'. People started referring to me as `Maulana' after it," guffaws Rajesh.
Ready to release is his upcoming film "Kokh", the womb. Thunders the man clad in white, "I am portraying Parshuram who is both a farmer and a reformer. The picture is about a woman being commoditised for the sake of her womb. I revolt against the evil forces for her, and aim to ameliorate her not only myself but by symbolising her as a delicate issue to be handled by those who call themselves the society's saviours."
"The movie is a live illustration of `no compromise in terms of words, deed or action' or the Sanskrit quote `Mansavaachakarmanda'. Women have been exploited since the dark ages. The character of Parshuram understands the pain she is undergoing and takes a humane interest, unlike others who only believe in the concept of give and take with a distressed woman," says Rajesh, candidly.
Three of his films "Jai Kali", "Lashkara" and "Haider Mahal" are due to be released. He hopes to make a film of his choice soon.
Says Vivek "I am looking for a script with a novel idea. If nobody can write what I am looking for, I will write it myself."
The man from the Coke advertisement with his patent punch of `Paanch' Rajesh Vivek is on the road to stardom... five more shots and he'll be there.
