Seafood spread
THE MENU at Fish 'N Joy (ph: 28280807) in Nungambakkam, the fast food restaurant, is impressive. For exclusive seafood joint, the prices are unbelievable: tuna cutlet for Rs.10, spicy fish curry at Rs.30, prawn masala: Rs.35 and fish thokku at Rs.25. For an ardent piscivore, it's like stumbling on a gold mine.
It was only when the starters came that the economics of the pricing became apparent. Order nethili fingers (Rs.10), you get precisely eight small pieces and butterfly prawns (Rs.35) come in pairs. But the tragedy was that all of them had left the deep blue ocean a few days ago. Then on, the rest of meal was a matter of figuring out which one had left the waters the earliest. That distinction goes to the fish that went into the fish biriyani (Rs.40). It was closer to the fossil stage.
If the fresh fish items disappoint, there is always the karuvadu or dry fish. At least that was what we thought while asking for motchai karuvadu curry (Rs.30). The brinjals and motchai beans in the curry went well with each other. The only thing missing was the karuvadu. But if you swish the curry around long enough in the mouth and focus, one can detect the flavour of dry fish.
The chicken curry (Rs.30) and murthabak (Rs.20), the Malaysian stuffed parata, were passable. So also was fish podimas or crumble (Rs.20). The flies buzzing around the table didn't help improve the meal either. Fish 'N' Joy has a long road to travel to bring joy to the diners.
