Nature through a lens

An exhibition of photographs by Kamal Chilaka captures the beauty of Nature
|
A TRIP to Mauritius opened businessman Kamal Chilaka's eyes to the glories of Nature... to laughing brooks, singing birds and verdant forests. He captured Nature and her bounties through his lens and some of these photographs are on display at Mementoes, 19, Vasu Street, Kilpauk.
Different varieties of flowers in lovely hues fuschia pink, yellow, red, purple and lavender, white with orange comprise most of the photographs.
The green vales of Uttaranchal, dotted with cottages, paint a pastoral picture. So do the palm trees swaying to a gentle breeze, frozen in time. An autumn leaf in orange placed against a brown granite background stands out.
For Kamal, who took to Nature photography as a hobby a couple of years ago, it has been a journey of discovery of the myriad moods of Nature, the delicate balance it maintains all the time and the beautiful aspects of our country.
The self-taught photographer, who runs a shipping business, says he was converted into a Nature-lover only after he took to photography.
The garden in Kamal's home proved to be a source for some shots. The animal kingdom is represented by a common brown butterfly set against green grass that makes you stop and look again. The wren sitting on a branch with a worm in its mouth is again a pretty sight. "A squirrel sitting on its hind paws, eating a nut, is a common sight. But how many of us even notice it? It is a reminder that people are so caught up with mundane chores that they do not have time to pause and enjoy the flora and fauna around them," says Kamal.
These pictures may not be unusual in any way, but they reiterate the splendour of Nature seen through the lens of a Nature lover. The photographs are on sale and the prices vary from Rs. 250 to Rs. 4,000 depending on the size.
The exhibition is open till October 12, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
