Young, with a passion for dance? The all-kids dance group Eila could help you out
|
MAITHILI BANERJEE has a maturity and talent that go beyond her 19 years. She is a choreographer with a number of stage shows under her belt. On Monday, this teenager, a sophomore at Loyola College's Visual Communication Department, pushed the envelope by launching Eila, an all-kids thematic dance group.
"The only requirements to join Eila are a passion for dancing, a desire to be in the limelight and appropriate age (3-16 years)," says Maithili. "Every member of the group, after training, will get to perform on stage. We will be organising four stage shows every year. Each of our shows will be based on a theme." Making common cause with Maithili are her classmates Bhavik Sanghvi (manager), Sandhya Rao and Sruthi, her friends Ankit and Akaash and her mother Sushmita Banerjee (public relations officer for Eila).
Equipped with a long training in Bharatnatyam and exposure to other Indian and Western dance forms, Banerjee does not want Eila to be chained down to a few dance forms. "It will be a potpourri of different dance styles. The members will be imparted a training that covers all dance forms."
Why a kids' dance group?
"Because kids are natural, lively, keen and full of energy."
Banerjee says that she will be dividing a portion of her earnings with her students. "It is their hard-earned money and they have every claim to it. We will deposit it in a bank so that it is of use to them when they grow up."
Auditions to select the members of the dance group will be held at The Residency Towers on October 11 and 12 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The new dance group will give a "grand performance" at the Music Academy on January 9, 2004. Eila can be contacted at # 9/4, M.G.R. Road, Kalakshetra Colony, ph: 31137140/ 31137159/ 52120206, e-mail: maithili@eiladanze.com.
