Food? Not at bay for Brande

SHE WAS much in the news when she was spotted among the crew of the serial "Baywatch". And this time again, she is attracting much limelight and whispers as a lead in Vashu Bhagnani's "Out of Control". But Brande Roderick turns out to be a normal English girl. No airs, no affectation and well, no make-up at all! But she would not say `no' to food ever!
"I love food but strictly vegetarian," says this Los Angeles-based 29-year-old actress all geared up to pick and choose from the lavish spread of food on offer at Ruby Tuesday Restaurant at Wave Multiplex in Noida. "Well, you can subtract a few years from my age when you write," she laughs.
Munching away at chicken wings with her favourite cocktail, Screwdriver, she says. "People are surprised when I tell them that I am actually a home-bug and I just love cooking." She vouches she can "cook all kinds of food," but barely gets a chance. "But on Christmas, I make sure that I cook something for my folks at home" - folks comprising parents, a brother and lots of cousins.
On one Christmas last year though, she nearly messed it up. "With great care I was about to prepare a special dish for everybody at home. I mashed potatoes, put in yam, but it all got burnt. Gosh, there were so many guests at home, and I was in a tearing hurry. I had to re-cook the dish," she recalls as she enjoys Ruby chicken curry.
"You know what? I like Indian spinach dishes very much. They are just yummy," says Brande, trying out the spinach dip.
An avid reader of "mostly non fiction", Brande did her `Minor' studies in theatre and majored in teaching in California. `Major' or main degree as she informs, is a four-year-course, which she left after two years, to pursue acting as a career. "I love teaching. In fact, I wanted to be a teacher. Acting was a childhood idea. But at this age, acting seems the best option for me. I can teach even when I am old. I am sure I will become a teacher one day and teach students," she says, as if consoling herself.
Learning Hindi for Vashu's films did not come as easily to Brande as chomping chinichanga vegetarian. She did not even know that Hindi films existed. "I never saw a Hindi film in my life. I did not even know that they had song and dance. But to work in this film, I saw a few of Vashu's films and I quite liked them," she says. To learn Hindi and specially lend lip sync to two Hindi songs, she wrote the words on a big piece of paper and from time to time got coaching from virtually everyone on the sets!
"And now I remember the entire song by heart," she chuckles and sings it sportingly on request, in her accented Hindi. "Howzzat?" she asks. The screen test was "easy at Vashu's studio," she says. "It is more difficult in my country. For `Baywatch' it was tough going, a four-step screen test."
For Brande, there are not any Hindi film offers as yet, but she will continue to sizzle on the American screen with Tod Philip's "Starchy and Hutch" that she has just signed.
Just taking a bite of cheesecake, figure conscious Brande is ready to leave Ruby Tuesday, with a final take on food, "Whatever you may say, cooking food is a real test of time and patience, right?"
Right!
