THE LALIT Kala Akademi premises has become more accessible to art lovers and students thanks to the "Walk The Studio" concept introduced by Siddhartha Ghosh, Regional Secretary of the Akademi. He is also a young painter and printmaker.
Says Ghosh, "Galleries display the finished work of an artist, and the viewer is not aware of the creative process involved. `Walk The Studio' will provide that experience."
A number of young and talented artists such as R. Balasubramanim, Benita Perceiyal, K. Siva and Ghosh are using the studio space and will be seen working there from January 23 to 25. This experience will be particularly useful for students. Among the veterans is sculptor Dakshinamoorthy who will be seen working on his sculptures.
In addition to walking the studios, Ghosh has put the spacious premises to judicious use. The entrance hall, which at one time was a large cavern except for two cabins meant for administrative staff has been transformed into counters for sale of Lalit Kala publications. Adjacent to it is space for a library. Siddhartha Ghosh has constructive plans for popularising the facilities offered by the Akademi, the existence of which not many Chennai-ites are aware of. The art gallery needs urgent renovation and the open spaces, landscaping.
