The pomegranate is truly the fruit of the Gods. Try it out in varied forms, as juice, salad and raita.

DELICIOUS, REFRESHING and rich in antibodies pomegranate is a good source of vitamin B and C. The fruit is a berry, five to 12.5 cm in diameter. Its leathery skin varies in colour from pale yellow to purple, red being the most popular. The fruit is very juicy and divided into compartments enclosing myriad seeds surrounded by crimson yellow to whitish pulp that is juicy and transparent.
When you feel hot and tired this summer try pomegranate juice, salad and raita to get instant energy.
Citric magic
Ingredients
Pomegranate shelled, cleaned (Mathalanaranga)-2
Orange-1
Honey-3tbsp
Cold water-150ml
Crushed ice-4 cubs
Slice of pomegranate fruit-2
Method
Remove the skin and fibre of pomegranate and orange. Segment them. Add honey and cold water and beat in a mixer. Strain it. Add crushed ice to it. Serve in a long glass with a slice of orange hinged on to the edge of the glass.
Pomegranate salad
Ingredients
Cabbage- 1 small
Spring onion- 3
Capsicums- 2
Green chillies- 2
Salt and pepper- to taste
Lemon juice- 1 tbsp
Sugar - a pinch
Pomegranate (shelled,cleaned and segmented)- 1 small
Method
Grate the cabbage. Finely slice the capsicums, spring onions and green chillies. Mix all the vegetables in a salad bowl and chill. Just before serving, add salt, pepper, lemon juice and sugar. Toss well, garnish with pomegranate seeds.
Pomegranate raita
Ingredients
Potatoes boiled- 4
Groundnuts (coarsely powdered)- 1 tbsp
Sambar Masala- 1 tsp
Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
Ginger garlic paste- 1 tsp
Ghee- 1 tbsp
Pomegranate (shelled, cleaned and segmented)- 1 small
Grapes- 10
Method
Peel the potatoes and chop into small pieces. In a pan, melt the ghee and fry the sambar masala, turmeric powder, ginger garlic paste and groundnuts, stirring all the time. Add the potatoes to the masala and cook for 10 minutes. Mix this with curd in a bowl and add the pomegranate and the grapes. Serve hot with bread.
