Men who matter
M. Appa Rao
One small provocation from an adversary made him jump into a business, which was totally new to him. He took the risk of putting all his earnings into the project to prove him. M. Apparao or popularly known as `Dolphin Apparao' started his career with the National Seed Corporation in 1962 after completing his MBA from Andhra University. In 1969, he joined his co-brother-in-law and founder of the Margadarsi Group, Ramoji Rao, to help him set-up the Eenadu group of publications and the Dolphin Hotel in Visakhapatnam.
While he was the managing director of Eenadu and Dolphin Hotel he picked up a rivalry with the chairman of Visakha Cooperative Diary, Tulasi Rao, over a few negative reports that were published in the daily.
"It was during those days that I decided to set up a diary farm. And after resigning from the Margadarsi group I set up the Dolphin Diary in 1996. In the initial days I faced a lot of problem from all quarters right from the farmers to marketing of the milk. After a struggle for almost two years I got my first break in the form of bulk supply order to Metro Diary in Kolkata. Subsequently I started marketing my milk in sachets and added value by launching energy milk, lassi, curd and buttermilk. Today, I have one main plant and four chilling plants. From a modest supply of 5,000 litres it has crossed over 60,000 litres on a daily basis. A ghee and a powder plant is in the pipeline," says Mr. Apparao. To counter the threat of the farmers he also started a cooperative by name North Andhra Milk and Agricultural Samithi for Technical Empowerment (NAMASTE). Apart form being the director of various organisation like Visakha Grameena Bank and Visakha Livestock Development Association he is also the president of Kakatiya Public School.
Though he has no political ambition he is a common face in almost all political meetings irrespective of the party.
