Attractive ikkats
|
It's the best of Orissa that is on show at the Utkalika exhibition
|
THE ARTISTIC skill of the craftspersons of Orissa is evident in the handicrafts and handlooms on display at a 10-day exhibition being organised by the Orissa State Handicrafts Corporation, Utkalika. Pure silk saris with Bomkai and double ikkat from Sambhalpur, Bolangir and Shonpur occupy pride of place. Also available are crisp tussar saris and dress materials. Some of the cotton ikkat saris have won national awards.
Besides the ikkat salwar kameez sets, dupattas and yardage, there are sets embellished with mirror work, jal work, lehera work and phulkari embroidery, which come at affordable prices.
Appliqué work, a distinct craft of Orissa, which involves cutting of fabric in the shape of flowers, birds, and animals and stitching them on coloured cloth, adds vibrancy to the display. The appliquéd umbrellas, wall hangings, lampshades and door garlands are particularly attractive. Beautifully sculpted sandstone icons and carvings from Konark, lacquer bangles from Cuttack, carved wooden artefacts from Puri and semi precious silver jewellery beckon attention at the show that is on till July 11, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Sri Sankara Mini Hall, TTK Road, Alwarpet.
