THE RUDRAKSHA beads are no longer known just for their medicinal and spiritual properties. Today, the brown beads seem to have become a fashion statement. Almost all jewellery showrooms create classic pieces in gold using this magic bead.
The beads, believed to be the tears of Shiva, caught the fascination of Kamal Narayan Seetha, an industrialist who became a rudraksha therapist. He started The Rudra Centre in Nagpur with the aim of propagating the benefits of the beads, and also supply good quality beads, which they source from Nepal and Indonesia mainly.
According to him, there are 330 types of rudraksha beads available in the world, of which the Roxb variety is considered to be of high quality. The beads, sourced from the Elaeocarpus Ganitras Roxb trees, are categorised according to the number of lines they have. The five or pancha mukhi is the most commonly found followed by the six and four mukhis. The rarest is the 21 mukhi, which can cost up to Rs. 15 lakh per bead.
Each mukhi bead is said to have its own special properties. For example, the one-mukhi bead is believed to bring fame and fortune.
And people such as Indira Gandhi, Shammi Kapoor, Rajnikanth and Amitabh Bachchan are known to possess these beads. Similarly, the four and six mukhis are said to be beneficial for education, while the three-mukhi ones signify good health and are good for people suffering from blood pressure and diabetes.
