IT'S A journey into the great unknown, to the final frontiers. The roads are barely motorable, the terrain gets dusty and the landscape sparse. But Bannerghatta Road is still home to three huge apartment blocks, a premier management institute and large MNCs — enough reason for a bunch of enterprising young men to sniff out an opportunity and open a continental and Chinese restaurant.
Bright spot
Wok and Grill is a sudden bright spot, literally, amidst the dust and grime of the crater-infested Bannerghatta Road. The dιcor is, on the one hand, modern and minimalist: vibrant colours, steel and wooden tables, square lines. But there are also deep coloured tiles and hanging paper lamps, which introduce a rustic feel, creating two ambiences. The restaurant's winding shape ensures that it never appears too crowded, providing many little alcoves for diners.
Although the restaurant has two chefs for the Chinese and the Continental, clearly its strong point is the Chinese. The Italian pasta salad was too spicy, with chilly flakes obvious to the eye and a mediocre sauce.
But when it comes to Oriental cuisine, the restaurant gets its act together. The vegetarian momos were perfect. Most momos, whether in Delhi's Chanakyapuri stalls or in Darjeeling, have their stuffing packed in like a lead pellet, but not here. The covering didn't collapse in an apologetic heap when pierced either.
The Wok and Grill momo holds it own. The stuffing is mild, allowing itself to be overtaken by the spicy chilly sauce and the casing is light and fluffy.
Not heavy
The fried rice of the main course was tasty, not greasy or heavy. The palak in baby corn is also a good dish; the palak, thankfully, stayed separate from the rest of the vegetables without getting in a tangled heap as it does in many places serving affordable Chinese cuisine.
Wok and Grill has a wide range of dishes in Thai, Chinese and Continental food. They also serve quick bites such as sandwiches and burgers and some seafood. A section will soon be converted into the bar area once their licenses are through.
What's recommended amongst the non-vegetarian dishes are the chicken in oyster sauce and the chicken with black bean sauce and the mandarin fish amongst the non vegetarian dishes.
A separate section on the menu titled "special side dishes" should guide you to their best.
Its owners say the restaurant has become especially popular with residents in Jayanagar and the apartment blocks on Bannerghatta Road who order food home.
