Variety is the key at the Poompuhar expo

NEW YEAR and gifts are synonymous. To help you choose the right gift, Poompuhar, the sales showroom of Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, has organised a `New Year and Pongal' gifts exhibition.
Candle stands, brass and copper plates, wall plates and special woodwork feature in the expo. "The gift items are a mix of tradition and modernity and new varieties have been introduced this year," says Mohammed Ali, manager.
The brass items from Moradabad need special mention. Panchaloha idols, Tanjore paintings and papier-mβchι dolls are also available. The prices of gift items range from Rs. 50 to Rs. 900. Every purchase comes at a 10 per cent discount.
For health conscious friends, you can gift the wooden acupressure items available at the expo. "Wood carvings are an added attraction. In previous expos, a wooden elephant came as one solid piece. This time, there is more detailing on the body. We also have wooden replicas of the Government emblem in various sizes," he adds.
All the wood items are carved out of seesham. Sandalwood carvings, brass lamps, traditional jewellery, leather bags and other metal items have also been exhibited. A total of 11 stalls have been put up in the expo, which is on till January 13.
