The Viceroy, on top of the Kadri hill, is a wonderful place for both foodies and nature lovers
|
MANGALORE IS a place of wonderful diversity. There's beach and fine sand, just as there are peaks such as Kadri. The undulating topography is simply breathtaking. Kadri is the highest peak in Mangalore, an ideal place for a Mangalorean to survey his kingdom on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Great view
Viceroy atop the hill and next to the prestigious landmark of the Circuit House is an ideal location for the lovers of both environment and great food. Viceroy, formerly known as Mayura Nethravati and run by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation, was one of the first government hotels to be privatised. It has won the coveted Excellence in Tourism Award instituted by the Indian Economic Development Research Association.
The proprietor of Viceroy, Shubha G. Rai, says that the hotel's biggest advantage is its great location. On a clear afternoon, the guests of the hotel can see the beach from the hill. They can stay put right there and watch the sunset as well. If you extend your stay a little longer, you can watch the entire city lit below, giving you a feeling of being on top of the world, literally. That's the time when the aromas from the kitchens to fill the air.
Girish Rai, who is in charge of hospitality, has found an "authentic Arabic cook" from Saudi Arabia to add more spice to their already spicy kitchen, which has Chinese, tandoor, and North Indian sections. It has a special kitchen for serving hot fish curries and kane rawa fry and kori sukka to go with appam, neer dose and the fluffy sannas. Girish says that his own choice is the local chicken ghee roast.
Viceroy has a well-stocked bar, but also offers a mind-boggling range of mocktails for those who do not care for alcohol.
Interiors
The interiors of the hotel indicate how much trouble the Rais have taken over doing up the place. It boasts of huge wooden arches, Mangalore tiles and imposing ebony doors and windows with etched panels.
It has a 17-room lodging facility, which is rather like a resort. It has an exclusive vegetarian restaurant, a chaat centre for evening snackers, a recreation club, and a special place for smokers.
