A DECADE of experience in Indian Administrative Service clubbed with a passion to serve the society made the job look simple for the first-time District Collector, G. Jayalakshmi, in Guntur. Complex problems of geographically one of the largest districts did not give an opportunity to the family to freak out even for a dinner.
Away from the madding crowd in the cozy corner of Vajrams Residency, the family got the first opportunity during its stay in the city to keep itself away from tonnes of files and endless phone calls.
Reading the psyche of people approaching Jayalakshmi as the district magistrate for grievance redressal is a cakewalk for her.
With a post-graduation in social work with medical psychiatry specialization from Stella Maris, Chennai, to her credit, she cherishes her choice of study the most, for she finds herself most suitable to the position she holds.
Wedded to woods
If Jayalakshmi looks after the welfare ofsocial animals, her life partner, Gopinath, from the Indian Forest Service takes care of the dumb creatures in the woods and vegetation as a divisional forest officer.
An IFS from the Nagaland Cadre in 1994, he believes in rational thinking and tackling the problems with a cool head.
A doctorate in botany from Mysore University, Gopinath is the biggest support for Jayalakshmi in the moment of crisis or when she is perturbed by the day's events.- In their case, she is not the proverbial woman behind a successful man, but it is the other way round.

A keen reader of biographies, Jayalakshmi is interested in Russian literature and the lives of Lenin, Karl Marx left an impact on her thinking on equality in opportunities for all and to an extent made her take up a degree in sociology. Good at basketball and volleyball in her school and college days, she picked up a bit of shuttle badminton and helps promote sports in the district with her attachment to the games.
A music-loving family, it steals a few evenings to watch a movie at home, but everyone has different taste in watching TV programmes.
