Discovering Micetich Colony
The Micetich Colony signboard and (right) the house that Anton Micetich built
Micetich Colony (Miscellany, May 1) is still very much there, exactly where it was, tell me readers P. Rajneesh, who used to live in the area, and K. S. Sisumani, who lives in the Colony. It is about a couple of kilometres past Huzur Gardens, the Simpson Estate in Sembiam, and just off the Madhavaram High Road. Heading towards Madhavaram Township and the Milk Colony along the High Road, the Colony is reached by a lane that turns left off the main road less than a kilometre past Moolakadai junction. I searched again the most detailed map of Madras available _ and found the Colony, only it was spelt Mcetich Colony, explaining why I didn't spot it in the index before. The map shows the Panchayat Office as being located in the colony and St. Anne's Higher Secondary School not far away. Reader Rajneesh got his friend Hansel J. Aubert to take the accompanying pictures which show the Micetich Colony sign, the intriguing Tamil version of the name, its `main street' and what's left of the house that Anton Micetich built. Note the restoration to the rear of the building, he writes, and adds, "This is still pretty much a rural area, with mango, guava and cashew orchards. Madhavaram mangoes enjoy a high reputation." Reader Sisumani tells me there are about 45 houses in the Colony, a number of them still Anglo-Indian owned. In fact, two grandchildren of Frank Micetich still live there, he adds.
