The Condemned

Sony Pictures, Rs.499

If you like your movies to be literally hard hitting this one is for you. Jack Conrad (Steve Austin of WWE fame) is a dangerous convict awaiting execution when he is purchased by a wealthy television producer and transported to a deserted island in the South Pacific along with nine other condemned criminals, similarly purchased from prisons around the world, they are offered the opportunity to avoid capital punishment and win back their freedom by fighting to the death in an illegal game to be filmed and broadcast live over the Internet.

As the tagline says 10 people will fight…nine will die. The plot reminds of where our reality shows are heading to! The producer of the show says TV ratings are no longer enough…he wants to reach out to the world through Internet without having to share the profit with any channel.

The film is a showcase of brutal violence as the WWE wrestlers have been allowed to cut loose in the acting ring. Austin impresses in his cold image but some of them act just cocky nothing else. Director Scott Wiper has succeeded in giving some layering to his story by incorporating elements like diminishing human values in the globalised world where even violence is being marketed.

The film is R-rated and should not be watched by children and weak-hearted.
